Obsidian – the spiritual power of the volcano

Obsidian, also called volcanic glass, is a very powerful stone. Its energy mainly has an effect on the balance of the lower chakras. As it provides grounding and spiritual protection, it is a popular healing stone and used for a variety of physical and mental ailments. Make use of its power by wearing it as jewellery or placing it on your body during meditation.

History, origin and characteristics

Obsidian is a volcanic rock that is formed when boiling hot lava meets cold water, then suddenly cools down and freezes. It consists of 70% of silica. Iron and magnesium colour it from black to dark green to dark brown. Its composition is similar to granite and rhyolite.

The most popular obsidian is the black one. Due to its weight and colour, black obsidian is often confused with pitchstone. The colour of the obsidian can vary widely, from very dark to light green and even reddish. In addition, it can have thin white, black and red lines or glow in different shades.

This powerful stone was named after the Roman Obsius, who was said to have first brought an obsidian from Ethiopia to ancient Rome. Obsidian is a very hard and brittle stone and, due to its sharp edges, found usage already in the Stone Age as a weapon and tool, such as cutting and drilling tools, knives, spears and arrowheads.

Obsidian originates only in volcanic areas, for example in:

  • Ethiopia
  • Armenia
  • Chile
  • Greece
  • Guatemala
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Canary Islands
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Peru
  • Turkey
  • USA

The physical healing power of obsidian

As a healing stone, obsidian helps to find the cause of the disease. This stone allows you to digest anything that is difficult in your everyday life. Using this energetic stone assists in

detoxifying the body and thus facilitates the release of energetic blockages, which underlie the physical symptoms.

Obsidian helps to relieve symptoms such as injuries, rheumatism and even arthritis. In addition, it has a positive effect on blood circulation and promotes the healing of cuts and injuries. In case of muscle cramps and abdominal cramps as well as other gastrointestinal complaints, obsidian can also provide relief. In addition, it is has a healing effect on prostate as well as bladder and kidney problems.

Spiritual properties and use

One of the properties of obsidian is its protective power. It has a positive effect on the flow of life energy, dissolves energetic blockages and acts as a shield against negative energies. Obsidian is able to work deep inside, on the soul level of the person who wears it. It can provoke abrupt changes, with extreme speed and power. Like a volcanic eruption, it ensures that whatever hides inside you explodes to the surface. That way it brings the unconscious to consciousness and promotes the confrontation with the personal shadow side.

Nothing can hide from obsidian; it forces us to grow spiritually and gives us stability while doing so. It can bring negative emotions and unpleasant truths quickly and abruptly to the surface. Likewise, it can dissolve creative blocks and bring hidden talents to light.

The deepest mirror of our soul

Obsidian is also known as the "stone of truth" and "mirror of the soul". It supports you in dealing with your personal fears and facing your phobias. In particular, if you want to deal with traumas from your past, obsidian can be of great help. The energy of the healing stone penetrates to the source of your fears and brings to light all the aspects that you need to face to overcome your fears. Obsidian may facilitate past life regression to heal deep-rooted emotions or traumas. Use it wisely and only if you really want to bring about change and have space and time to confront and take care of yourself.

Obsidian has a strong mental effect and helps you clear your head and dissolve confusions. Not only does it promote a clear mind, but also the development of trust and, in particular, self-confidence. The obsidian grounds those who use it and protects them like a shield from psychic attacks and negative energies. In doing so, it creates a safe space for you to deal with your psychological issues and personal trauma. Depending on the colour of the obsidian, the benefits of a particular aspect can be increased.

Obsidian colours and specific properties

  • Black obsidianis a very powerful and creative stone. Its use intensifies inner vision and fosters facing the true self. It is very protective, rejects negativity and dispels unloving thoughts. Place it on your navel during meditation and you will feel it applying its spiritual energy in your body and dissolve your mental barriers and emotional blockages.
  • Golden obsidianis very effective as a crystal ball for communicating with the source of all that is. On the psychic level, it eliminates feelings of meaninglessness or ego conflicts. At the spiritual healing level, it balances the energy fields.
  • Mahogany obsidianis the name of the brownish obsidian, which has a gentler energy than the black obsidian. It gives strength and vitality, promotes the ability to concentrate and eliminates energy blockades in a less violent yet effective manner. It derives its lighter colour from its higher iron content, which is why it also has a strong grounding and balancing effect.
  • Rainbow obsidianis tiny obsidian, yet very powerful and protecting. It combines the colour spectrum of the rainbow, absorbs the negative energy of the aura and eliminates physical and mental stress by purifying the chakras and getting your life energy to flow. Use it in meditation to strengthen your physical, mental and emotional balance.
  • Blue-green obsidianhas a positive impact on the heart and throat chakra. It helps to liberate the heart and freely express what dwells inside of it.
  • Smoke obsidian, also calledApache tears, is black, slightly brownish, violet, or greenish, and if you hold it into the light, it reflects a golden glow. This shimmer looks a bit like smoke. Legend has it that a Native American died at its locality. Maybe this is why it is said to be soothing and consoling.
Steel-blue obsidianis black obsidian with a deep blue glow. Its shimmer ranges from light to indigo blue. This obsidian acts on the sixth chakra, the third eye, and strengthens your intuition as well as supernatural perception.
